Die aus Michigan stammenden Teenager Medina und Jim ziehen mit ihren Eltern ins idyllische Palos Verdes, Kalifornien. Die Mutter der beiden Jugendlichen steht am Rande eines Nervenzusammenbruchs, weil sie sich zwischen all der Fake-Bräune und den Tennis-Röcken fehl am Platz fühlt, während ihr Vater zwar ein erfolgreicher Chirurg für die Stars wird, aber dadurch kaum Zeit für die Familie hat. Bei den Kindern sieht es ähnlich aus: Medina ist eine einsame Außenseiterin an ihrer Schule, der charismatische Jim hingegen wird schnell beliebt.
